The multi-sera calibrator carries assigned values for a large part of the routine chemistry menu in a single material, which is what makes it practical: calibrating twenty assays from twenty separate calibrators would be unworkable on a busy bench. It is used at installation, after a change of reagent lot, after certain maintenance, and whenever quality control indicates the calibration has drifted. The assigned values are lot-specific and arrive with the material, so they are entered from the accompanying documentation rather than carried over between lots.

How often does a chemistry analyzer need recalibrating?
The usual triggers are a change of reagent lot, certain maintenance procedures, and quality control indicating drift, rather than a fixed calendar interval. That means calibration frequency follows your delivery pattern: a laboratory receiving frequent small reagent shipments changes lots more often and gets through more calibrator than a site taking larger deliveries at the same total volume.
Can we use the calibrator as a quality control material?
No, and this is an important distinction. The analyzer has just been adjusted to agree with the calibrator, so running it back as a control proves only that the adjustment happened. A control has to be independent of the calibration to be able to detect a problem with it, which is why control material is separate and independently assayed.
