The difference between a calibrator and a control
These two are ordered together and often spoken about in one breath, but they do opposite jobs and they must never be the same material. A calibrator has an assigned value and its job is to teach the analyzer the relationship between what it measures and what that measurement means. Calibration is an adjustment: you are moving the instrument onto the right scale. A control also has an assigned value, but its job is to ask a question rather than answer one, and the correct response to a control result is never to adjust the instrument until it matches. It is to accept the run or reject it. That is why running the calibrator as a control proves nothing: the analyzer was just set to agree with that material, so of course it agrees, and a fault affecting the whole system would be invisible. It is also why control material is assayed independently and supplied at more than one level. A single normal-range control can look perfectly acceptable while the instrument is badly wrong at the high and low ends, which is exactly where clinical decisions get made.

How much control material should we hold in stock?
Work from your QC policy rather than your analyzer count: multiply the number of levels by the number of runs per day by the days in your delivery interval, then add cover for the interval itself. A laboratory running two levels twice a day gets through control material considerably faster than its reagent consumption would suggest, which is why controls are the item most often short.
Can we use a third-party control on a Mindray analyzer?
Some laboratories run a third-party control as an independent check, and there are good arguments for it. What it cannot do is replace the manufacturer control where the analyzer expects assayed target ranges for its own material, and it will not carry Mindray target values.
