What Chemistry Control Level 2 does
Level 2 carries assigned values in the abnormal range, and it is the level that does the work a quality control programme exists for. An analyzer whose response has drifted at the upper or lower end of its measuring range can still produce entirely acceptable results in the middle, so a laboratory running only a normal-range control has no visibility of the errors that matter most. Those are precisely the results that trigger a clinical decision: a raised creatinine, a low glucose, a markedly abnormal potassium. Level 2 is run alongside level 1 at the frequency the laboratory quality control policy requires, and the same rule applies to failures, which is to reject and investigate rather than adjust.
How Philippine laboratories run it
Ordered and run in step with level 1, so the two should always be on the same schedule and in the same quantity. A laboratory that runs out of level 2 and continues on level 1 alone has quietly stopped testing the part of the range that matters, and because nothing visibly breaks, this can persist for weeks. It is worth treating as a stock-out that stops testing rather than one that can be worked around. Accreditation assessors in the Philippines will look for both levels in the recorded history.

Questions about Chemistry Control Level 2
Can we run level 2 less often than level 1 to make it last?
It is a false economy. Level 2 is the level that tests the analyzer where clinical decisions are made, so reducing its frequency removes exactly the assurance the programme exists to provide, and it will be visible in the quality control history an assessor reviews. If control material is running short, the answer is to fix the schedule rather than to thin out the level that matters most.
