Questions about Uric Acid
Does a normal uric acid rule out gout?
No. The level can be within the reference interval during an acute attack, which is a well-recognised trap, and conversely many people with a raised uric acid never develop gout at all. The test supports the clinical picture and is used to monitor urate-lowering therapy, but the diagnosis is made by the physician rather than by the number.
Why is uric acid checked before some cancer treatments?
Because treatment that destroys a large number of cells quickly releases their contents into the circulation, and purines released that way are converted to uric acid. The level can climb sharply, which matters for the kidneys. Where that is anticipated the uric acid is measured before treatment and followed afterwards, so the laboratory may receive a run of requests on one patient over a few days rather than a single one.
